MLB players union needs to drop the hypocrisy: Paul Hoynes' Rant

The news of possible MLB suspensions for players such as Milwaukee's Ryan Braun has come from leaks from both baseball and the players union. (Rick Wood, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- I know the Biogenesis investigation is serious business. The reputations and careers of several high-profile players could be damaged. But for the Major League Players Association to come out last week and stomp its feet in protest over information being leaked to the media is disingenuous.

Major League Baseball is built on leaks. Player signings and contracts are leaked weeks before they become official. Rumors of trades, managerial firings, front office upheavals have fueled baseball's popularity since the first player whispered into the first reporter's ear, "I want out of here."

During the labor wars between owners and players, a legitimate story couldn't be written without a reporter securing leaked information from both sides. Why should MLB's hunt for the game's latest flock of cheaters be any different?

The best thing that's happened to baseball in the last 10 years has been the founding, enforcing and continued strengthening of the Joint Drug Agreement. It's made for a fairer, safer game. The confidentiality of the process is important, but it isn't leak proof.

Nothing is in baseball.
