Best Week in Washington Sports: The people of Richmond

My colleague Chris Cillizza has a great weekly feature called ?Worst Week in Washington,? where he spotlights a political figure who has landed on the wrong side of the press. I?m stealing a page out of his playbook, and it was my original intention to award a ?Worst Week? to a D.C. sports figure every Friday. But I?m generally not a cranky person, so I decided that the Bog version should be all puppies and chocolate-chip cookies. So here?s ?Best Week in Washington Sports.??

When RGIII and the Redskins landed in Richmond for training camp, they thrust the city into the national spotlight, if only for the next three weeks.

?The brand of the city just took a giant step,? Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones told WTVR. ?Whenever the Redskins are mentioned, then Richmond is going to be associated with it. So people are going to say Richmond is a great town.?

The mayor also bragged about the increase in foot traffic on the streets of Richmond, which he hopes will lead to a positive effect on the city?s economy. More than 10,000 combined fans showed up to the training facility for the first day of camp. That number will only go up on Saturday, when fans who work during the week will get to ditch their ties in favor of their favorite jerseys.

Whether the short-term flurry of activity will actually create the boost Richmond is looking for has yet to be determined. But for now the city has hope.

?It says we?re capable, that we have vision,? Jones said. ?We have the ability to break out of the mold of just being a historical city. We also want to be a contemporary city. A city where people want to come, where tourists want to visit and we can be a sports town.?

Well, a sports town for three weeks, at least.
