NBA AM: Playoffs Or Bust For New-Look Pistons

Fans of the Detroit Pistons haven?t had much to cheer about in recent years. After an impressive run by the franchise from 2002 to 2009, which included a championship, two trips to the NBA Finals and six Eastern Conference Finals appearances, the club hasn?t reached the playoffs the past four seasons. To say the Pistons needed a huge summer to reverse their recent fortunes at the start of the offseason would have been a huge understatement.

BrandonJennings_InsideOnly2There are three primary ways NBA teams can improve ? the annual draft, free agency and the trade market. The Pistons were active on all three of these fronts this summer and there is a growing optimism from its fan base that the team should also be in the playoff mix next season.

The Pistons drafted guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope with the eighth overall pick in this year?s draft and followed up the selection adding promising players Tony Mitchell and Peyton Silva in the second round.

On the free agency front, Detroit hauled in one of the top five players on the market in summer by signing veteran forward Josh Smith to a four-year $54 million deal. The team also added veteran guard and former Finals MVP Chauncey Billups on a two-year deal.

Lastly, the Pistons likely ended their summer of moves by acquiring free agent guard Brandon Jennings in a sign-and-trade deal with the Milwaukee Bucks. As part of the agreement, Jennings was ?awarded a three-year $24 million contract.

Detroit also added a new head coach this summer, bringing in league veteran Maurice Cheeks to run the show from the sidelines. Cheeks will be the third head coach to grace the sidelines for the team since 2010.

Despite the solid moves, on paper this summer, it is safe to say president of basketball operations Joe Dumars? job is on the line and breaking the playoff drought with a strong season may be the only thing to salvage it.

Pistons owner Tom Gores has remained consistent in his public messaging that his goal for the franchise is a playoff trip in 2014. Here is a Gores quote from an interview with Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press that took place in early July.

?I want to see solid progress, but I?m not shying away from the fact that we need to find our way to the playoffs. I don?t want to shy away from that. I think that should always be something that we strive for. We?ve got some really, really good pieces and I think we?ve come a long way since we got the team. Remember, we bought it in the lockout season. Last year was first real year and we?ve made a lot of progress, I think, as ownership in building a good core of young folks. We?ve got room to make some moves. I don?t want to shy away from making the playoffs because we really should. It?s going to be hard for me to enter any season not expecting that.?

The above quote from Gores was given before the signing of Smith and the trade for Jennings, so there?s no reason to believe this set of expectations hasn?t been solidified after the summer of additions.

The future is much brighter in Detroit than in years past and it?s hard to envision the team which also boasts promising bigs Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond not becoming a playoff fixture in the next few years. However, it appears Dumars may not have years of leeway to watch his vision for the club to unfold.

For Dumars? job security, the 2014 campaign is likely playoffs or bust.

Lakers Coach Mike D?Antoni Questions Dwight Howard?s Decision To Bolt In Free Agency

All-Star center Dwight Howard entered the summer as arguably the biggest free agent name available ?on the market and his decision to leave the Los Angeles Lakers in order to join the Houston Rockets sent ripples throughout the entire league.

Lakers_Logo_TileIt is not often a marquee player in the midst of their prime leaves Los Angeles to seek greener pastures and the decision still boggles the mind of Lakers head coach Mike D?Antoni.

?It?s hard for me to sit here and criticize or even to understand why he left a place like L.A.,? D?Antoni told ESPN Los Angeles radio. ?That?s kind of mind-boggling a little bit, but that?s in his DNA and what he wants to do.

?You can debate it all you want. Only Dwight knows. Obviously he didn?t think he would be as happy here as he will be in Houston. That might be the case and he had to make that decision. There will be a lot of speculation, we tried it, it didn?t work out and we go forward. So be it. You hate it. Dwight?s one of the better centers in the league and it would have been a long-term thing, but I looked at it like, ?OK, you don?t have Dwight but you got Pau [Gasol].? So, we?ll see. In the short run, we?ll see what happens. In the long run, obviously 10 years from now Dwight might still be playing and maybe Pau is retired, but everybody has got to do [what's best for them].?

Howard signed a four-year $88 million deal with Houston, leaving the Lakers? five-year $118 million offer on the table. The nine-year veteran averaged 17.1 points and 12.4 rebounds on 58 percent shooting in 76 contests during his lone season in Los Angeles.

White House silent on Weiner staying in NYC race

Should former congressman Anthony Weiner stay in the New York City mayoral race?

The White House won't touch that question with a ten-foot pole.

A reporter raised the issue at the daily briefing, asking spokesman Josh Earnest whether President Barack Obama had expressed any view on whether Weiner should quit.

"Not one that I've heard," Earnest replied.

News in Brief: Tigers meet, mix in forest corridors

In India, narrow strips of wild land connect small groups of cats

Endangered tigers? habitats have been carved up in central India, but the cats still prowl through strips of forest that connect these far-flung populations, a new study finds. These corridors enable the estimated 273 tigers in the area to intermingle and stay genetically strong, researchers report online July 30 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Using historical data and genetic analyses, Sandeep Sharma of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, D.C., and his colleagues illuminated the tigers? story: In recent centuries, as roads, factories, mining operations and railroads started to impinge on wild terrain, India?s tiger population splintered into smaller, distinct groups. But several of these groups remain connected by tendrils of pristine forest, the researchers found, allowing the cats to maintain a healthy mix of genes.

Currently, these forest pathways have no legal protection in India. A mining company has just applied for a lease that would sever one corridor in the study, Sharma says. Such a split could be devastating for the tiger population, he says.

Carrying Four Tight Ends Could Decide the Washington Redskins' 2013 Season

Eagle-eyed fans of the Washington Redskins will have noticed an anomaly this year. Mike Shanahan is likely to carry four tight ends on the final 53-man roster, compared to three in his previous three seasons with the team. In addition to the obvious effect on the depth chart, these four players could actually make or break the entire season in Washington.

Fred Davis, Logan Paulsen, Niles Paul and Jordan Reed all have different skill sets that should guarantee them a roster spot, if not actual playing time.

Of those four, Davis is the most complete player. However, his presence still comes with a question mark. It?s still unknown how his recently-healed Achilles will hold up in a game situation and all eyes will be on him the first time he anchors his foot to execute a block.

Davis? blocking has improved a lot over the last two years, but it is his ability as a pass-catcher that makes him so valuable to the team. Davis has speed that the other TEs can?t match, evidenced in his top season as a pro?2011?when he had six games with 80 yards or more, a franchise record.

Again, the Achilles injury will be discussed prior to his first start this season. In order to reach full speed, he will need to have complete confidence in his body?any hesitancy will slow him down.

Before the injury, Davis had developed into a trusted target of Robert Griffin III and was actually the team?s leading receiver before going down in Week 7. Griffin will again require that sort of production, especially if this year sees the young quarterback throw the ball more.

Who will be most successful at tight end for the Redskins in 2013?

Who will be most successful at tight end for the Redskins in 2013?

  • Fred Davis

  • Logan Paulsen

  • Niles Paul

  • Jordan Reed

If Davis is the pass-catching tight end, then Paulsen is the blocker. Although he has decent hands and is underrated as a receiver, his primary function in Davis? absence was to block well and allow others to get open. He picked up a few crucial first downs and showed incredible effort across the season, but still finished with fewer yards than Davis.

There has been a lot of talk over the offseason about defending the read-option. One of the strategies offered is to ?hit the quarterback, no matter what? and Griffin?s perceived fragility makes him a prime target for such a tactic.

Whether it?s a linebacker, cornerback or safety, there?s going to be defensive players trying to ambush Griffin on every play. With Paulsen, the Redskins have a TE with the size and ability to negate that extra threat to the quarterback, as well as providing solid run support to give Alfred Morris room to move.

Running two tight end sets with Davis and Paulsen also gives Kyle Shanahan the chance to get Davis open and protect Griffin at the same time.

Against the Buccaneers?in 2012, Davis ran the hot route as the Bucs sent a blitz late in the fourth quarter. What should have been a quick checkdown to keep the ball moving turned into a 20-yard gain that set up Griffin?s first game-winning drive. Although it's true that no one on the defense seemed to notice Davis, he used his agility to get out of a tight space and gain significant yards.

Opposing teams know that the Redskins were 9-1 with Pierre Garcon on the field, so shutting him down will be their main priority. Whether this is through double coverage, physicality or simply allocating him to the best corner on the roster, it could free up space elsewhere on the field. With no one emerging as the undisputed No. 2 receiver in 2012, it could fall to the tight ends to pick up the slack.

Elsewhere, Niles Paul and Jordan Reed are somewhat enigmatic at the tight end position. Paul struggled at times with the transition from receiver, looking too preoccupied with his route to properly focus on the play at hand. He dropped passes, too, which further set back his progress. However, with 2012 in the bank he should be much improved in that area and provide a useful option for the team in 2013, both as a blocker and receiver.

Before the startling events of the offseason, Jordan Reed was being favorably compared to Aaron Hernandez, due both to his Florida Gator background and his playing style. Part of the new breed of Joker tight ends, Reed has great hands and the ability to break away from defenders on every reception. Although his recovery from injury is key to his success, the Redskins must have been confident enough in his healing powers to use their third-round pick on a guy they had no intention of drafting before he became available.

Reed's blocking is a severe weak point right now, but it?s unlikely he?ll be used along the line of scrimmage much, a lot like Hernandez wasn?t. If the Redskins continue to use the Pistol, Reed can line up deep so his blocking is less integral to the success of the play, as well as occasionally operating out of the slot to keep the offense fresh and unpredictable.

Although carrying four tight ends inevitably means a roster spot is lost elsewhere, it seems like a beneficial move for a team like the Redskins that thrives on misdirection and irregularity.

Griffin?s injury hangs heavy over Washington going into this season and there will be a lot of emphasis on how he can repeat his 2012 success while remaining healthy. With four tight ends on the roster, the Redskins may already have the answer.

Was President Obama?s speech on the economy just words again? Readers weigh in

Re: ?Just Words From Obama ? Speeches avoid hard work needed for economy,? Thursday Editorials.

    Obama?s jobs act forgotten

Clearly, the American Jobs Act presented to Congress in 2011 has been totally forgotten.

The president presented that potential bill in total and in three parts in an attempt to get Congress to act on something that most economists think would actually get the economy moving. It was summarily rejected by the House.

If I am not mistaken, Congress has the responsibility to get the ball rolling on much of what needs to be done.

The president has said that he will move forward with whatever the powers of his office will allow him to do. We know such powers are limited.

However, he is not the only one ? Congress and most of our Texas representatives cannot only be accused of that but of much worse.

Deliberate obstruction seems to be their only response to needed legislation.

    Carol Brown, Dallas/Prestonwood

    Back to middle class

I was born, arguments would firmly hold, into a lower-middle to middle-class family. But by applying myself to education and study, and through a 35-year career of hard work, sacrifice, dedication, commitment and fiscal restraint, I have ascended firmly into the upper-middle class.

In some ridiculous political arguments, I even qualify as the now reviled 1 percent.

In Wednesday?s presidential address, Mr. Obama exalted his commitment to re-energize and expand the middle class, sending an eerie shiver down my spine.

His thinly veiled entitlement administration, near socialistic agenda and his tax and spend habits give me reason to believe that his plan will likely include tax strategies that aim to encumber and punish me back into middle class.

At an age, now, where I?m able to see my retirement on the horizon, enjoying the fruits of my labors and staying self-sufficient are clearly threatened.

For those of us who still believe that hard work, not entitlement, is the path to success, this sly and silver-tongued president is a clear and present danger.

And by the way, since when did hard-earned success become so disdainful?

    Steve Massey, Plano

    Positive plan of action

Was the editorial board not listening to the meaning of the words?

A newspaper, full of words, should know that words stimulate thought, conversation and action. Did the editors not hear President Obama?s aggressive plan for improving our economy and our way of life?

The editorial?s words in response to the president?s positive plan simply precede the negative words that will come from those who have no action plan for improving our economy.

    Bruce Ackerman, Irving

    Damaging job creation

The News was half right in being critical of Obama?s most recent speech on how to fix our economy. Obama believes, as most liberals do, that simply making a speech or talking about your good intentions is the same as actually accomplishing the objective. Because Obama has given this same speech numerous times, with little improvement in the jobs picture, there is no expectation that anything will be any different this time.

What is not needed, however, is more spending, as promoted in The News. Instead we need specific actions that create the opportunity for job creation. For example, approving the Keystone XL pipeline would create immediate jobs. Although the president touts the increase in oil and gas production, very little of the increased production has come from federal lands where Obama is restricting permitting as much as possible.

Obamacare is the most damaging program to job creation, especially for small businesses. The excessive cost of mandated health insurance is causing some businesses to not hire full-time employees or cut their hours.

Obama has no intention of taking any corrective actions in these areas to create jobs. What he is creating is a good campaign script for the 2014 elections.

    Dennis Croysdale, McKinney

    Trust matters first

On the evening news, I saw our president making a speech somewhere in Illinois trying to improve his approval rating. He said something to the effect of we need to quit worrying about all these phony scandals.

    Phony scandals?

A murdered U.S. agent in Arizona, four dead Americans in Benghazi and average citizens being spied on by different government agencies.

And politicians wonder why nobody trusts them.

    Jimmie George, Farmersville

    Phony president

After watching Mr. Obama challenge the U.S. Constitution at every opportunity, I submit that we have a phony president.

    Tom Graham, McKinney

    Obamacare games

Re: ?Push is on to gut health law ? GOP to bargain with cuts to Obama priorities, such as renewable energy initiative,? Wednesday news story.

In this front page story, congressional Republicans, including Texas Sen. John Cornyn, threatened not to extend the national debt limit this fall unless the president agrees to repeal Obamacare. This immature position is akin to a small child threatening to hold his breath unless he gets his way.

Let?s be very clear: Increasing the debt limit makes it possible for the nation to pay the bills that Congress has already incurred. It is not authorizing additional spending. Does John Cornyn refuse to pay his personal credit card bills when they come due?

Is the GOP really serious about destroying the full faith and credit of this great country by refusing to pay the bills they have run up? The result would send interest rates soaring on home loans and every other type of credit. Texas and the nation deserve better from our elected officials.

    Richard Simms, Denton

    Distracting from scandal

I hope one of these days that President Obama will realize that he has to represent all of us. His latest statements have made me feel like I?m an outsider in my own country.

It seems that the only voices that are being heard are the ones that scream the loudest. That does not make them correct or logical just because they drown everyone else out.

What should be happening right now is a controlled and factual discussion of the inequities and excesses that are now dividing the nation. Unfortunately, I feel that the old adage ?never let a crisis go to waste? is being brought into play in order to shift public attention away from some of the other glaring controversies, such as Benghazi, IRS, Obamacare, NSA and the deficit.

Leading from behind hasn?t worked in foreign policy and most certainly will not work with domestic policy.

I wouldn?t say that the Republicans are showing much in the leadership department, either.

    Jon Taylor, Fairview

    Job is to create jobs

Last Sunday?s Face the Nation on CBS, House Speaker John Boehner made an interesting comment: We will be judged by how many laws we will repeal. That is not the job of the Congress. They are supposed to create jobs. That statement proves Boehner and his crew aren?t interested in the welfare of the country.

I think a change is needed in both leadership and congressional representatives. If not, you will have the obstructionists and nonperformers.

Best Week in Washington Sports: The people of Richmond

    John McDonnell/The Washington Post

    (John McDonnell/The Washington Post)

My colleague Chris Cillizza has a great weekly feature called ?Worst Week in Washington,? where he spotlights a political figure who has landed on the wrong side of the press. I?m stealing a page out of his playbook, and it was my original intention to award a ?Worst Week? to a D.C. sports figure every Friday. But I?m generally not a cranky person, so I decided that the Bog version should be all puppies and chocolate-chip cookies. So here?s ?Best Week in Washington Sports.??

When RGIII and the Redskins landed in Richmond for training camp, they thrust the city into the national spotlight, if only for the next three weeks.

?The brand of the city just took a giant step,? Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones told WTVR. ?Whenever the Redskins are mentioned, then Richmond is going to be associated with it. So people are going to say Richmond is a great town.?

The mayor also bragged about the increase in foot traffic on the streets of Richmond, which he hopes will lead to a positive effect on the city?s economy. More than 10,000 combined fans showed up to the training facility for the first day of camp. That number will only go up on Saturday, when fans who work during the week will get to ditch their ties in favor of their favorite jerseys.

Whether the short-term flurry of activity will actually create the boost Richmond is looking for has yet to be determined. But for now the city has hope.

?It says we?re capable, that we have vision,? Jones said. ?We have the ability to break out of the mold of just being a historical city. We also want to be a contemporary city. A city where people want to come, where tourists want to visit and we can be a sports town.?

Well, a sports town for three weeks, at least.

As Home Prices Rise, House Flippers Profit From ... - RealEstate.com

    Home Prices Soar

Here?s some celebratory news for sellers. With inventory depleting, U.S. home prices jumped 7.3 percent in the year ended May, according to the Federal Housing Finance Agency. On a seasonally adjusted basis, prices rose 0.7 percent from April. Economists were expecting a 0.8 percent increase, according to Bloomberg.

Movement toward a seller's market in much of the U.S. is benefiting house flippersThe gain in prices indicates that the economy is indeed on the mend. A separate report by Zillow showed that home values increased 2.4 percent in the second quarter. That?s the largest gain for a second quarter since 2004, according to the report.

?The U.S. housing market as a whole is currently not experiencing a bubble, but in many places it sure must feel like one,? Zillow Senior Economist Svenja Gudell said in a statement. ?Homeowners are feeling a sense of whiplash after years of depreciation.?

The news is very encouraging for builders and sellers. When the market was inundated with inventory, builders held back from launching new projects. With home prices on the rise, home starts are expected to increase again. That would also help buyers, who would then have more options to choose from.

?Flip That House? Makes a Comeback

When the housing market crashed, it tanked investor confidence and U.S. reality television programs such as ?Flip That House.? But, with home prices on the mend and mortgage rates at historic lows, bargain hunters are again on the prowl. So are the television cameras that follow them around, according to news reports.

Fast declining inventory and improving home prices have again attracted house flippers, who are constantly looking for a sweet deal. With home prices increasing they are again making some good profits.

?It?s all about pricing,? Richard Sluzewski, who has been flipping houses in Daytona Beach, Florida, for 22 years told the Financial Times. ?Everyone is expecting property values to keep on climbing, so it?s a great time for flippers. Investors are spending more on renovating homes now compared to last year, knowing that buyers are willing to pay more. With such low supplies, it?s a sellers? market for sure.?

House flipping deals are expected to hit a record high this year. They were up 19 percent in the first half of the year from 2012. When compared to 2011, they are up 74 percent.

Profits have touched the highest level in seven years. On average, investors are making $18,391 on each sale. That?s more than triple returns in the first six months of 2012. Two years ago investors had incurred losses of $13,206.

    Mortgage Rates Drop

For the second straight week, the average rates on fixed mortgages fell, bringing much relief to homebuyers who want to snag a good deal and lock in low rates on a new home.

According to mortgage firm Freddie Mac, the average rate on 30-year loans fell to 4.31 percent compared to 4.37 percent last week. But it?s nearly a full percentage point higher than in early May.

The average rate on 15-year loans declined to 3.39 percent. That?s down from 3.41 percent last week. The shorter loans are favorites among consumers looking to refinance.

After staying at historic lows for a long time, rates had reached a two-year high of 4.51 percent two weeks ago in anticipation that the Fed would slow down on bond buying. Bond purchases have helped keep rates at bay, encouraging buyers to lock in low rates. Economists believe that a rate increase would slow down the housing recovery process.

    Dolphins May Have Individual Names

Click here to listen to this podcast

Many animals use sounds to convey information. [Sound of wolf? howl] Humans use particular vocal labels for objects and for people. We call these words, and names. A few creatures, such as parrots and dolphins, can learn specific vocal labels. And wild dolphins are known to have particular, individual signature whistles. Scientists at Scotland?s St. Andrews University wanted to know: can these whistles be used as labels? The researchers analyzed sounds from dolphins off Scotland?s east coast, and extracted these signature whistles. [Dolphin whistle sound] Then they altered the sounds so the calls wouldn?t sound exactly like the originating dolphin. [Altered dolphin whistle]
They played those sounds back to the dolphins, along with whistles from dolphins familiar to the animals and whistles from strangers. When the dolphins heard their own signature whistle [Altered dolphin whistle] they routinely responded with that same sound. [Dolphin whistle sound] That reaction only happened twice when they heard sounds from their pals and not at all when they heard the alien dolphin. The research is in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. [Stephanie L. King and Vincent M. Janik, Bottlenose dolphins can use learned vocal labels to address each other] The researchers think dolphin signature whistles serve as self-identification, and maybe even as a label for addressing each other?just like a name. ?Cynthia Graber [The above text is a transcript of this podcast]???
