It is a known fact that for most drivers, having some amount and type of car insurance is an essential part of owning and operating a car or moving vehicle.? Although a car insurance policy can be complex, there are several elements which are typically common to most of them.? Let?s discuss this further.
Car insurance is designed to protect the occupants of a vehicle as well as those associated with an accident.? This can be occupants in another car involved in the accident or even bystanders who happen to have the bad luck or being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
A key type of coverage for car insurance is liability.? This provides money to pay for damages from injury to people or property involved in the accident.? If someone gets hurt and requires medical care, the liability coverage normally kicks in to take care of those expenses.? It can also cover claims made against a driver for damages.
If drivers did not have this type of coverage, they could be personally responsible for claims made against them.? This could certainly be financially devastating which is why this coverage is so important.
There are limits which can be set on the amount of liability coverage desired.? Typically they can range from $10K up to $1000K or more depending on the vehicle and owners involved.
While liability coverage typically covers losses caused by injury, there are other types of coverage for damage to vehicles.? Collision covers damage to a vehicle as a result of an accident.? This type of coverage kicks in irregardless of the circumstances.? It covers the cost of repair to a damaged vehicle and in some cases covers a full replacement of the vehicle.? Most collision coverage includes a deductible meaning that the policy holder would be responsible for a portion of the repairs.? Typical deductible amounts can range from $100 to $1,000 or more.? The cost of the coverage is lower as the deductible increases so this is an important consideration.
Comprehensive coverage is for damage to a vehicle from things like vandalism.? It can also cover replacement or repair to a windshield as a result of flying debris, etc.? This coverage also carries a deductible so it?s important to consider this type of coverage carefully.
There are many other types of coverage as part of a car insurance policy.? Your car insurance agent is best equipped to help explain these coverage options and make appropriate recommendations.
There are also many resources on the Internet which can help explain these coverages so you can better understand them and make well informed decisions.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? First Lady Michelle Obama took the stage at an awards ceremony Saturday with poet Maya Angelou, performers Stevie Wonder and Mariah Carey, and other African American celebrities who called the black community to civic action, starting with voting in the 2012 presidential election.
The taping of the BET Honors, hosted by Black Entertainment Television was held at the historic Warner Theatre in downtown Washington.
It brought out stars including singers Patti LaBelle and queen of soul Aretha Franklin, as well as Washington political figures such as former Secretary of State Colin Powell and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.
The politics-meets-glamour event fits in with the recently ramped up efforts by Obama to help her husband, President Barack Obama, win a challenging re-election bid in November.
Obama, in a crimson, one-shouldered gown, presented the Literary Arts award to Angelou and appealed to the crowd to follow Angelou's example as an activist.
"It is not enough merely to seek greatness for ourselves, we must help others discover greatness within themselves. We need to reach down and reach out, and give back and lift others," she said.
Speakers at the ceremony praised the Obamas for being the first black family in the White House and told the audience to "vote like your life depends on it."
"We have to exercise our constitutional right to vote. And there's a man out there with a vision for this country and he intends to finish what he started," said Beverly Kearney, head coach of the University of Texas' women's track team.
Those honored were filmmaker Spike Lee, World War Two Tuskegee airmen, as well as Angelou, Kearney, Wonder and Carey.
Obama stayed for the three-hour taping during which several acts had to be done over. While posing on stage with the award winners an audience member yelled, "We love you, First Lady!"
"Just her coming out and having a good time, it comes off like she's just like the rest of us. Since she connects, it's going to be helpful to her in helping Barack get another term," said Sonya Lowery, 41, of Maryland.

DENVER (AP) ? Gov. John Hickenlooper urged lawmakers Thursday to move forward on social and financial goals this session, encouraging them to prove ?cynics? wrong and show they can cooperate to legalize civil unions for same-sex couples and make Colorado more business-friendly.
The Democratic governor made his highest-profile push in support of legal protections for gay and lesbian couples during his State of the State address, saying ?government should treat all people equally.?
?It?s time to pass civil unions,? Hickenlooper said to applause and a standing ovation from Democrats. Most, if not all, Republicans remained seated.
Lawmakers passed a civil union bill in the Democratic-led Senate last year but the legislation failed in the House, where Republicans have control.

About a dozen states allow civil unions or same-sex marriage. Civil union laws took effect this month in Hawaii and Delaware. And Democratic governors in Washington state and Maryland also are pushing lawmakers to adopt such laws.
Hickenlooper also encouraged lawmakers in the state?s split Legislature to work together to attract businesses and spur free enterprise ? a point the governor underscored by referencing Colorado legend John Stetson, saying the iconic hat-maker embodied the entrepreneurial spirit the state so badly needs to re-capture.
?If there were ever a time when Colorado needed to spur greater support for entrepreneurship to create and attract new business, it is now,? Hickenlooper said.
The state faces nearly $700 million in budget cuts this coming year. The general fund budget is at about $7.4 billion.
He said collaboration would prove wrong those who predict gridlock.
Watch CBS4?s interview with Gov. John Hickenlooper after the speech below:
?Cynics say it?s an election year and partisan fights will drown out any hope for success,? he said. ?We believe the cynics are wrong.?
Hickenlooper also highlighted the need to ease regulations on businesses and asked lawmakers to send voters an overhaul of the state personnel system, saying, ?The state constitution is riddled with personnel rules and administrative procedures that are obsolete and should be reformed.?
The speech was largely well-received by both parties, immediate divisions emerged only on civil unions and ways to find budget savings.
Republican House Speaker Frank McNulty said he was pleased to hear Hickenlooper discuss entrepreneurship. ?When we hear these themes from the governor, they do fit very nicely with what our agenda is as House Republicans,? he said.
Watch an interview with CBS4 below where Speaker Of The House Rep. Frank McNulty provides the Republican response to the speech:
Hickenlooper also used his address to cite some successes from his first year in office, including attracting Arrow Electronics to move to Colorado, passing a budget by a majority vote after a contentious debate and creating a health insurance exchange as required by federal law.
Hickenlooper said the state?s economy is still recovering from the recession and that revenues are still $1 billion lower than they were five years ago and cited that lost revenue a reason to do away with a nearly $100 million property tax credit for seniors.
Republicans are adamant the credit remain and the issue is likely to be sore point during the session.
Hickenlooper said although revenues have begun to increase, Colorado?s economy recovering at a slow pace. He said he wants to restore the property tax break for seniors when the economy is healthier and lawmakers should work on economic development if they want the tax credit restored.
Republicans have said the state should seek a ?waiver? from some Medicaid spending requirements in order to find savings.
Watch an interview with CBS4 below where Senate President Sen. Brandon Schaffer provides the Democratic response to the speech:
Hickenlooper has said that?s not possible, but acknowledged that the growth of Medicaid is ?not sustainable for the state budget.?
Republican Sen. Greg Brophy has sponsored a bill to seek a waiver and he said it sounded like Hickenlooper ?all but endorsed that idea.?
Senate President Brandon Shaffer said he hasn?t reviewed Brophy?s bill but said he intends to keep an open mind. ?I think that there?s room for a lot of common ground, a lot of compromise this session,? he said.
Medicaid would account for $185.6 million of the $227.1 million spending increase in Hickenlooper?s proposed general fund budget.
?We are absolutely committed to bending the Medicaid cost curve and pursuing strategies that will cut Medicaid costs. We are tackling fraud, over-payments and eligibility,? he said.
McNulty said Hickenlooper should do more than that.
?What we need to have is not talking points about waste, fraud and abuse,? he said, adding that both parties and Hickenlooper should discuss how ?we get out from underneath those federal mandates, for crying out loud.?
Regarding civil unions, McNulty said it?s an issue that ?distracts us from the issues of job creation and economic recovery.?
Democratic Rep. Dickey Lee Hullinghorst said she was glad to see Hickenlooper ?receive broad support from both sides of the aisle on just about everything.?
Hullinghorst said she noticed a large division only on civil unions, where she saw ?Democrats standing and Republicans not standing.?

SAN FRANCISCO ? Microsoft Corp. has finally reached a long-sought and expensive goal ? its Bing search engine now ranks second behind Google in the Internet's most lucrative market.
Bing and Microsoft's other websites fielded 2.75 billion search requests in the U.S. during December, catapulting in front of Yahoo Inc. for the first time in the jockeying for runner up to Google Inc., according to statistics released Wednesday by comScore Inc.
Bing's December volume translated into a 15.1 percent share of the U.S. search traffic, comScore said. Yahoo processed 2.65 billion search requests, representing 14.5 percent of the U.S. market.
Google remained Internet's go-to place for information, with 12 billion U.S. requests in December. That works out to a 65.9 percent market share.
Other research firms track the Internet search market. But comScore's numbers matter the most to industry analysts and the companies trying to attract queries so they can make more money from the ads that appear alongside the results. Google's dominance of online search is the main reason it has established itself as the Internet's most profitable company.
Analysts have expected Microsoft and Yahoo to flip-flop their positions in Internet search since they announced a partnership in July 2009. The 10-year agreement has enabled Yahoo to save money by relying on Microsoft to provide the bulk of its search technology.
Microsoft wanted the deal so it would have billions more search requests to analyze each year, giving it a better chance to learn about people's tendencies and preferences.
Pursuing Google has come at a huge cost for Microsoft, which still makes most of its money from the Windows operating software and other software it sells for personal computers. Microsoft's online division, which is anchored by Bing, has suffered operating losses of about $7 billion since June 2008.
Even though it leans heavily on Microsoft's technology, Yahoo hasn't totally abandoned search. It still offers some unique features within its results in hopes of persuading more people to search on its website instead of going directly to Bing. The main reason: Yahoo still gets 88 percent of the ad revenue from searches conducted on its website and receives nothing from queries entered on Bing.
The efforts haven't been enough to prevent a steady slide in searches at Yahoo. The company's share of the U.S. search market stood at about 19 percent when it joined forces with Microsoft, according to comScore. Meanwhile, Microsoft's market share has climbed from roughly 9 percent.
Yahoo's eroding search share is one of the reasons that its revenue has been falling during the past three years, causing a downturn in its stock price, too. The company just hired Scott Thompson to become the fourth CEO in the past five years to attempt a turnaround at Yahoo.
"Scott Thompson has his work cut out for him," Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney wrote in a research note breaking down comScore's latest search statistics.
