Sponge | Life According to Julie

I?m like a sponge. My brain sucks up information at rapid speed when I am learning something new. I?ll admit I use this gift as a distraction from dealing with any unpleasant emotions, but I could think of worse things to do. I?ve been putting off thinking about all the s*&^ that went down a couple of weeks ago after the media blitz, and have turned that negative energy into teaching myself about hubpages.

I know I?ve written about it here and there this week, and if you are friends with me on Facebook, you will see I?ve been posting an article (or two or three) a day. It?s a great website. The basics are as follows: it?s a blogging community, you write informational articles on topics you are interested, make friends, and post your links. Depending on the traffic of your blogs, you earn a couple pennies on every blog hit.

The learning curve is sharp. I?m used to ranting and raving in the first person, and well ? that just doesn?t fly over there. So I?ve branched out, writing recipes, how-tos, some humor, and other types. I encourage any of you who might like to try writing, to give it a whirl. Message me and I?ll be happy to lend a hand with what I?ve learned in the past couple of days. And of course, PLEASE IF YOU LOVE ME, read my hubs. I?ll earn money off all this typing! And no you don?t have to join in order to read.

Let?s see, what else? Oh yes, I?ve been pondering at what point I can officially call myself a writer. Is it when I?m published? Paid? Just someone who types over 2000 words a day? Well, I?m officially a paid copywriter. And 2000 words is an easy day. I?m working on the publishing part. So I?ll stick to my wanna-be writer status for now until someone other than me thinks my work is publish-worthy. That isn?t a word. Shhh.

Speaking of published, I?m attempting to write an article for a humor site called cracked.com. If you are forty and over, you won?t know what the hell I?m talking about. It?s a site that appeals mainly to men, but gets an enormous amount of daily traffic as it posts ridiculous articles about crazy topics. If you get published over there, you are considered seriously badass. You are guaranteed at least half a million people looking at your work.

Well, nothing like going big or going home. So I?ve submitted two proposals, and working on a few more. And finally?I would like to speak to the rumors that are running through the GSA community regarding my plans to write a book. I could write a nice gentle, compassionate, and professional response, but that just isn?t me.

All I have to say is this: if you think that I?ve put my time,?reputation, blood, sweat, and tears into SOAR and geneticsexualattraction.com because I want to get rich? You are smokin? something. ?Get your head out of your ass for one moment and realize that people all the time write books, memoirs, and other tales not just for money, but to tell a story. If you are writer, you understand that. If you are a money hogging idiot, you don?t.

I will write a memoir. That?s a given. I may never get published, and that won?t stop me from writing?you see, because that is not why I write. So you can all stop ruminating about whether or not I?ll write a book, because I will.

Okay I?m done.

Last but not least?the DeNeen?s ate the WORLD?s best chicken pot pie tonight. I posted a hub with the recipe. Check it out!

Ad for Fire-Resistant Clothes Uses an Unusually Artsy Approach ...

A division of the apparel giant VF Corporation is taking an unconventional tack by devoting a big chunk of its marketing budget to a video ad.

The division, Bulwark FR, sells fire-resistant clothing worn by miners, utility workers and oil-rig workers. Pitches for Bulwark FR are typically in the traditional realm of business-to-business advertising like print ads aimed at safety engineers, catalogs and trade shows.

But now, Bulwark FR and its agency, Fitzgerald & Company in Atlanta, part of the Interpublic Group of Companies, are adopting many of the trappings of mainstream marketing in an effort to stand out and make an impression. It is another example of how the business-to-business advertising field is changing as it begins to use the tactics of business-to-consumer advertising.

The video, which runs almost eight minutes, shows a paper sculptor, Jeff Nishinaka, building an elaborate facsimile of a busy industrial setting, complete with towers, factories and workers. The finished paper sculpture is placed in a quarry and set afire.

Mr. Nishinaka?s work of art is soon reduced to nothing, collapsing in an inferno. The video ends with the words ?Because people aren?t fireproof? on screen.

The title of the video ad tips off the plot. It is called ?451?? ? after the temperature at which paper burns.

?We are one of the unheard-of brands of the VF collection,? said Stan Jewell, general manager for Bulwark FR in Nashville, referring to the company?s other labels like Lee, Nautica, Timberland and Wrangler.

?Being a business-to-business brand,? he added, ?we don?t have that commercial familiarity.?

But with Bulwark FR becoming ?the fastest-growing brand? within VF, Mr. Jewell said, ?we?re trying to capitalize on that? by ?dedicating a huge part of our marketing spend to greater visibility.?

About 60 percent of the brand?s estimated $2 million budget is being devoted to making the video ad the centerpiece of the marketing for Bulwark FR. The video can be watched on a section of the Bulwark FR Web site, where there is also additional content like stills, time-lapse video and a shorter version.

The video is scheduled to be introduced on Monday, said David Crace, vice president for marketing at the VF Imagewear division of VF, also in Nashville. It is to be shown at a conference in Denver, he added, sponsored by the American Society of Safety Engineers, and subsequently ?seeded on different video sites.?

?We are all in on this,? Mr. Crace said. ?It goes as wide as we can push it.?

Marc Lineveldt, executive creative director at Fitzgerald, said the video was ?a year in the making.?

The idea initially was to dramatize the theme ?Because people burn,? he added, which ended up being expressed as, ?Because people aren?t fireproof.?

?If the world was made out of paper, it would strike home the idea of how flammable we are,? Mr. Lineveldt said, and, by extension, how useful the work clothing made by Bulwark FR can be.

Asked if the video runs the risk of being too ethereal or abstract, he said he did not believe so, adding: ?The reason we?re excited about it is because it is pushing, it is challenging. If it misses, it?s in the pursuit of doing something worthwhile.?

?Business-to-business is traditionally old-school,? Mr. Lineveldt said, but ?speaking to people a little differently? ? more like the way they are spoken to in business-to-consumer campaigns ? is ?something fresh.?

?B-to-b is dead,? he added. ?Long live b-to-b.?

3 Solid Reasons How Green Tea Can Transform ... - Ask Questions

Green tea began appearing in smaller health food stores in perhaps the 70s, and ever since that time researchers have been uncovering the health-giving mysteries of this ancient food. As a natural stimulant, it can be part of your diet plan, while the antioxidants are good for your heart and cholesterol levels. In addition to that, more is being discovered about this incredible natural and healthy food from the East.

Truthfully, everyone should drink green tea every day; but now we?ll talk about a couple of the reasons why we say that.

Perhaps one aspect of green tea that most may not know is that it is a stimulant that is not as strong as coffee and certainly other energy drinks. There are millions of people who get over-stimulated from coffee and caffeine, so green tea is an excellent and healthy option over coffee. Since it is a healthy substance that increases your metabolism, it?s also good for people who are trying to lose weight. Coffee has roughly twice as much caffeine as green tea. Some energy drinks are even higher in caffeine, and this often has adverse effects on people. So you can take advantage of the stimulating properties of green tea without all the other concerns about high caffeine intake.

Millions of people have arthritis and other bone/joint diseases, and green tea has been implicated as having healthy qualities for those conditions. There are general anti-inflammatory abilities in green tea, as well as antioxidants, but the former can help provide relief in many areas just one of which is arthritis. As you may know, it is the inflammation of the joints that cause the pain and stiffness in arthritis; so consuming green tea every day may help with that.

It is probably unknown if green tea can actually prevent arthritis, but it will help your overall health as well as help reduce the inflammation.

This little plant can really help you to heal yourself and remain healthy. If you prefer, you can just follow suit as the Chinese and Japanese and drink the hot tea. If you want, during the hotter months there?s nothing wrong with drinking green tea in iced tea form. And if you don?t like tea for some reason, or find it too much trouble to make, you can find many supplements that supply you with a healthy dosage. For people who are sensitive to caffeine, there are many decaffeinated types of green tea available. One approach is consuming the regular strength version at work during the day, and then after hours drink the decaffeinated tea. Those are just ideas, and you are the only one who knows the best thing to do for you.

As you have read, green tea is tremendously beneficial for overall health.

Surely there will be additional research on green tea in the future, and we?re excited to know what else will be known. A healthy substance will tend to be good for the body as a whole. You can drink it as tea or take it in capsules, and so it?s incredibly easy and painless to ingest.

There are excellent, unique, and powerful benefits of green tea; and what else will come out is anyone?s guess. How you decide to take-in this plant food is up to you, so maybe it?s best to talk to your knowledgeable health store consultant. Of course you need to take it regularly so you can experience all the benefits.

Google: Ice Cream Sandwich now accounts for 7.1 percent of Android user base

Google Ice Cream Sandwich now accounts for 71 percent of Android user base

Well, it's about time that Ice Cream Sandwich made some headway -- even if the process is much slower than consumers deserve. According to the Android developer hub, Android 4.0 now accounts for 7.1 percent of all Android smartphone and tablet installations, which is a sharp and welcome increase over the 2.9 percent figure that we reported just one month ago. Naturally, Gingerbread users still account for the lion's share of the Android ecosystem with 65 percent, but it's worth pointing out that this segment also grew during the last month -- no doubt at the expense of Froyo and Eclair. Don't know about you, but we like our desserts fresh, thank you very much. Go ahead and hop the break to see the full breakdown.

Rewarding Research: Top Scientists Share $3-Million in Kavli Prizes

Prestigious award recognizes seven researchers for their pioneering contributions to nanoscience, neuroscience and astrophysics

John Holdren, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, spoke of the importance of prizes in spurring innovation. Image: World Science Festival

Mildred Dresselhaus, the so-called ?queen of carbon science,? took home the $1-million Kavli Prize in Nanoscience today. The materials scientist from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was awarded for her work in revealing the strange thermal and electrical properties that carbon develops at the atomic scale. These discoveries helped lead to the development of novel materials, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes, which have applications in energy, medicine, optics and electronics.

Dresselhaus is one of seven researchers who received the Kavli Prize for discoveries in the fields of nanoscience, neuroscience and astrophysics. The winners were announced Thursday at the World Science Festival in New York City, via a live broadcast from Norway.

Three researchers, whose work focused on understanding perception and how affects behavior, shared the $1-million Neuroscience prize. Cornelia Bargmann of The Rockefeller University illuminated the first neuronal pathway between a sensory receptor protein and behavior in nematode worms. Ann Graybiel of M.I.T. revealed that areas of the basal ganglia in the brain reorganize when an organism learns new things. The third winner, Winfried Denk of the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, Germany, was recognized for his pioneering work in connectomics? mapping the brain's neural connections.

The astrophysics prize went to a group of researchers who discovered and described the Kuiper Belt?the ring of planetary leftovers that encircles our solar system. David Jewitt (University of California at Los Angeles), Jane Luu (M.I.T) and Michael Brown (California Institute of Technology) used advanced optical techniques to find the belt and analyze its composition. The frozen objects in the Kuiper Belt are thought to preserve the primordial materials that helped form the early solar system.

Before the winners were announced, President Obama?s science and technology adviser, John Holdren, gave a lengthy talk on how to encourage innovation and scientific achievement in the U.S. The event?s organizers hope that highlighting the winners? contributions will inspire others. ?I think what?s impressive about the prize winners today is the role models that they set for kids,? said Angela Belcher, a materials scientist at M.I.T. who spoke on a panel following the announcement. ?These people are heroes in science. I think it?s a huge motivating factor.?

Editor's Note (5/31/12): This story was edited after posting. It originally incorrectly stated that all the winners of Kavli Prizes would split a total $1-million purse. In actuality there are three awards of $1 million each; if there are multiple winners of an award, they divide that category's $1-million prize.
