Troubles For Energy Industry Detract From Exciting Week For U.S. IPOs

Two energy companies, Dynamic Offshore Resources (DOR) and Platinum Energy Solutions (FRAC), postponed, while two others, Matador Resources (MTDR) and U.S. Silica (SLCA), were down 2% and 5%, respectively, after the first day of trading. All four companies are exposed to the decline in natural gas prices, which has prompted some leading players (e.g. Chesapeake Energy (CHK)) to cut back on capital expenditures. The biotech space remains challenged, despite the success of Verastem (VSTM), which increased its deal size and is up 10% since its IPO. Biotech Merrimack Pharmaceuticals (MACK) postponed its deal on Wednesday; Cempra (CEMP) priced 50% below its proposed midpoint and gained 1% in its first day of trading. Internet security provider AVG Technologies (AVG) also had a weak showing. It priced at the bottom of its range and traded down 19% on its first day. As mentioned, the one bright spot was Greenway. Although it priced at $10, slightly below its range, it raised $67 million and is now trading above the range, up 32% from its offer price.

Filing Activity

There were four companies that filed for IPOs last week. Skin treatment provider Tria Beauty (TRIA) was the 17th (and last) company to file in January, bringing the month into a two-way tie for the most January filings since 2000. Facebook (FB) was the second to file, on Wednesday, followed by coal producer Foresight Energy Partners (FELP) on Thursday. On Friday, Enerkem (NRKM), which converts municipal waste into biofuels, filed for a $125 million IPO.

Upcoming Reports

This week, several high profile Internet companies with recent IPOs will report results. Jive Software (JIVE), trading up 42% from its offer price, and Groupon (GRPN), up 24%, will release financials for the first time since their IPOs on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. LinkedIn (LNKD), up 78%, and Imperva (IMPV), up 83%, will be reporting results on Wednesday. Zynga (ZNGA), which only began trading above its offer price on January 27th but is now up 34%, is scheduled to report next week.

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany ? Julia Mancuso's wait for her first win of the season is over. Lindsey Vonn will have to wait a little longer to break another record.

Mancuso won a super-G on Sunday for her first World Cup victory of the season, while Vonn skied off the course and did not finish.

It was the first time two different American women have won World Cup races on consecutive days since December 2006, when it was also Vonn and Mancuso.

Vonn captured her milestone 50th World Cup win in a downhill on the same slope a day earlier. But she was forced to wait for her start for about three minutes while officials fixed a gate and Vonn could not hold her line Sunday after hitting a bump midway down the icy piste. She was looking for a record 18th super-G career win.

Mancuso produced a clean run in freezing conditions, with bright sunlight and deep shadows alternating on the Kandahar course and making for poor visibility. She won on the same slope where she clinched the super-G silver medal at last year's World Championship.

"I thought when I crossed the finish line, 'If that wasn't good enough, then I don't know what is,'" Mancuso said. "I didn't feel like I had the best run, but I kept my skies stable the whole way.

"The course was set really fast, besides a couple of turns, and I knew I had to push myself to the limit and make those technical sectors clean, then it was just a case of trying to go as fast as possible. You couldn't see, I just had to try to stay on it."

It was Mancuso's first super-G win since 2007 in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. She now has six career World Cup wins, to go with two Olympic silver medals and a giant slalom gold at the 2006 games.

"You have to go fast and not care where you are. I like to see ? it's better when it's sunny ? but it gives me an advantage, because I know I can perform in difficult conditions," Mancuso said.

Vonn was not the only one to ski off the course. Four of the first six starters also failed to finish and several others joined the group, including Tina Maze of Slovenia, Vonn's closet challenger for the overall title. Vonn still has a massive lead of 482 points.

Vonn quickly left the finish area and could not be reached for comment.

Mancuso finished in 1 minute, 20.50 seconds. Anna Fenninger of Austria, super-combined world champion here last year, was second, 0.13 seconds behind, and Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein was third, 0.45 back.

Weirather was also third in Saturday's downhill, while Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany, last season's overall World Cup champion, finished fourth for the second straight day.

Too many kids breathe others' smoke in cars: CDC (AP)

CHICAGO ? Texting while driving, speeding and back-seat hanky-panky aren't all that parents need to worry about when their kids are in cars: Add secondhand smoke to the list.

In the first national estimate of its kind, a report from government researchers says more than 1 in 5 high school students and middle schoolers ride in cars while others are smoking.

This kind of secondhand smoke exposure has been linked with breathing problems and allergy symptoms, and more restrictions are needed to prevent it, the report says.

With widespread crackdowns on smoking in public, private places including homes and cars are where people encounter secondhand smoke these days. Anti-smoking advocates have zeroed in on cars because of research showing they're potentially more dangerous than smoke-filled bars and other less confined areas.

The research, from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was released online Monday in Pediatrics.

The study is based on national surveys done at public and private high schools and middle schools. Students were asked how often they rode in cars while someone was smoking within the past week. The most common answer was one or two days. The smoker could mean other kids or parents; the study didn't specify.

A CDC fact sheet suggests even small amounts of secondhand smoke can be risky.

"There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke," the CDC says.

Overall, 22 percent of teens and pre-teens were exposed to secondhand smoke in cars in 2009, the latest data available. That figure declined gradually during the decade, from 40 percent in 2000, the study found. But still, the numbers of kids still facing the risks "is certainly problematic," said CDC researcher Brian King, the study's lead author.

"The car is the only source of exposure for some of these children, so if you can reduce that exposure, it's definitely advantageous for health," King said.

The CDC advises parents to not allow smoking in their homes and cars, and says opening a car window will not protect kids from cigarette smoke inside.

Measures banning smoking in cars when children are present have been enacted in a handful of states and proposed in several others. The study authors say similar bans should be adopted elsewhere.

Director, writer, producer Zalman King dead at 70 (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Actor and filmmaker Zalman King, who became known for his erotic work after writing and producing his breakthrough film "9 1/2 Weeks," has died. He was 70.

King's son-in-law Allison Burnett says the filmmaker died Friday morning at his home in Santa Monica, Calif., after a six-year battle with cancer.

Born Zalman King Lefkovitz in 1941, King began his career as an actor in the 1960s. He and wife, Patricia Louisianna Knop, collaborated on the screenplay for "9 1/2 Weeks," which became a cult hit starring Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke.

King's other credits include "Wild Orchid" and "Two Moon Junction," which he wrote and directed.

He is survived by his wife and daughters Chloe King and Gillian Lefkovitz.
