LG's NYC press event aims to 'share the genius' of the Optimus G Pro

LG

LG's just shed some much-needed light on its May 1st New York event. Turns out the "genius" the company will be celebrating stands for Atlas Genius -- as in the band -- and the star of this fete: the Optimus G Pro. We've already seen and very favorably reviewed the global model of LG's performance flagship (for the G's successor, you'll have to wait until Q3) and now it looks like the US is in store for a potential carrier-branded version of its own. If it arrives internally unmolested, we're looking at a 5.5-inch 1080p True HD IPS+ display, Snapdragon 600 and a 2.1-megapixel / 13-megapixel camera setup capable of dual video recording. We'll be on-site for this stateside debut, so stay tuned for the full monty.

Is science education an important part of The Big Bang Theory, which revolves around two physicist roommates and their friends?

It bears a family resemblance to science education. What we try to do is to make people feel that scientists are real people and that science is something that real people, like themselves, could do.

How do you balance scientific discourse with character development?

We try not to make too strong a dualism between the two because our characters are people who care passionately about science. For example, we had a fight between Sheldon [a main character], who is a physicist, and his girlfriend, Amy, who is a neuroscientist. And the content of the fight got pretty philosophical because he said, ?My research is intrinsically more important than yours because reality is physical, and the physical will ultimately explain biology and therefore explain the human brain.? And she said, ?My research is more fundamental than yours because when you're doing physics, something is going on in your brain, which my biology will be able to understand.? And then they broke up. All you really need to know is that she was saying she's smarter than he is, and he was saying that he's smarter than she is?the emotional reality of what was going on.

For the most part, the show's writers don't have science backgrounds. What do you do to prepare?

We read science journalism, and we familiarize ourselves as much as we can with things that our characters would be concerned with. For example, I was listening to an NPR story about the neuroscience behind habit formation and habit extirpation. That would be an interesting thing to deal with. And we have a consultant who is an actual physics professor at U.C.L.A.?David Saltzberg?so we run stuff by him.

Is there any rhyme or reason to the animations of atoms that break up the scenes? I think I noticed lithium once.

I think I asked the same question when I showed up. I was like, ?Hey, is that lithium?? And the answer I was given was, ?Yes, it is lithium.? But it's not [there] because lithium is an antidepressant or anything like that.

(AP) ? The Senate's top Democrat is setting Congress' first showdown vote for Thursday on President Barack Obama's gun control drive as a small but mounting number of Republicans appear willing to buck a conservative effort to prevent debate from even beginning.

Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada announced his decision Tuesday as the White House, congressional Democrats and relatives of the victims of December's mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., amped up pressure on GOP lawmakers to allow debate and votes on gun control proposals. Twenty first-graders and six educators were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School, turning gun control into a top-tier national issue.

"We have a responsibility to safeguard these little kids," Reid said on the Senate floor, pointing to a poster-sized photo of a white picket fence that had slats bearing the names of the Newtown victims. "And unless we do something more than what's the law today, we have failed."

"We don't have the guts to stand up and vote yes or no? We want to vote maybe? Tell that to the families in Newtown" and other communities where there have been mass shootings, said Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt.

But Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, one of 13 conservative senators who signed a letter promising to try blocking debate, said the Senate bill puts "burdens on law abiding citizens exercising a constitutional right." He said none of its provisions "would have done anything to prevent the horrible tragedy of Sandy Hook."

Obama was calling senators from both parties Tuesday to push for the gun bill, according to a White House official.

Reid's determination to stage a vote came despite inconclusive talks between Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Patrick Toomey, R-Pa., aimed at finding compromise on expanding background checks to more gun purchasers.

But Manchin left a meeting in Reid's office late Tuesday and said he hoped a deal could be completed on Wednesday. Such a compromise would be likely to attract bipartisan support because both lawmakers are among their parties' most conservative members.

The checks, aimed at keeping firearms from criminals and certain other buyers, are the cornerstone of Obama's gun plan, which has been struggling in Congress. Democrats have been buoyed by polls consistently showing more than 8 in 10 Americans support subjecting more buyers to background checks.

A Senate vote to begin debating the guns package would mark a temporary victory for Obama and his allies.

Some Republicans, though eager to avoid blocking debate, could vote against the measure on final passage. Coupled with resistance by leaders of the GOP-run House to main parts of Obama's effort ? including bans on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines ? the ultimate outcome seems shaky for Democrats.

Reid said he did not know if he had the 60 votes he will need to defeat the conservatives' roadblock. But at least eight Republicans have said they want to begin debate or have indicated a willingness to consider it: Sens. John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, Susan Collins of Maine, Roy Blunt of Missouri and Mark Kirk of Illinois.

But some moderate Democrats are remaining noncommittal and might oppose opening the gun debate, including Sens. Mark Begich of Alaska and Mark Pryor of Arkansas, who are seeking re-election next year.

Begich declined to directly state his position and said of Alaskans, "We like our guns."

There are 53 Senate Democrats and two independents who lean Democratic.

In a written statement, Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, said conservatives want to prevent Obama from rushing the legislation through Congress "because he knows that as Americans begin to find out what is in the bill, they will oppose it."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has said he will join the conservatives' attempt to block debate.

The bill would expand required federal background checks to nearly all gun transactions, stiffen penalties for illegal firearms trafficking and provide a small boost in school safety aid.

Eleven Sandy Hook family members representing eight of the shooting victims were on Capitol Hill to lobby senators from both parties for gun legislation, including Isakson.

"We bring a face to this tragedy," said Mark Barden, who lost his 7-year-old son, Daniel. "We bring a very personal perspective. People should listen to what we have to say and move the debate forward. It's not just about our tragedy. Lots of kids are killed every day in this nation. We have to help lead the change."

Some relatives had breakfast with Vice President Joe Biden at his residence in the Naval Observatory. Later, Biden spoke to law enforcement officials at the White House and told reporters that conservatives would not succeed in blocking debate.

"This is not one of these votes that they block a vote and somehow we're going to go away," Biden said. "The American public will not stand for it."

The president's gun-control proposals have hit opposition from the National Rifle Association, which was using the Internet and emails to urge its members ? it claims nearly 5 million ? to tell members of Congress of their opposition.

In GOP-heavy Louisiana, where Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu is seeking re-election next year, the NRA wrote to its members, "Please contact Senator Landrieu and encourage her to oppose this anti-freedom legislation."

Counteracting that has been an effort by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, one of whose leaders is billionaire New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The group was running a television ad in Pennsylvania asking voters to contact Toomey and tell him to back expanded background checks. It also said it will keep track of key gun-related congressional roll calls and make the information available to voters and contributors ? a tactic long used by the NRA and other groups.

Manchin has been hoping for a deal with Toomey that would expand the requirement to sales at gun shows and online while exempting other transactions, such as those involving private, face-to-face purchases.

Currently, the checks are required only for sales through licensed gun dealers.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ??The night after WrestleMania 29 may go down in history as one of the most exciting ones in WWE history. It may also be remembered as the most fun, thanks to the sold-out crowd, who gave every last drop of energy they had, chanting in and outside the arena for everyone from the commentators to Fandango. For three straight hours, they chanted loudly and proudly, leaving those not in attendance wishing they could take part.

More than 1 million members of the WWE Universe have passed through the turnstiles at the IZOD Center since 1984, all extremely passionate about the Superstars and the action that plays out in the squared circle. There may not have been a more passionate audience than the capacity crowd of 16,173 people that squeezed into the arena 24 hours removed from WrestleMania 29, though.

From the second Raw?went on the air, it was clear that the WWE Universe was up for one thing: pure, unadulterated fun. Three hours later, many were asking if episode No. 1,037 of Raw was the best in the show?s 20-year history.

WWE.com caught up with the new champion to get his reactions to the great crowd. Barrett gave credit to the international flair of a post-WrestleMania crowd, with fans from all over the world taking part in Raw.

?It?s the best crowd America?s ever seen. It?s like a football crowd,? he said. ?I looked out in the crowd and saw a lot of U.K. flags. I think they did all the cheerleading.?

?You heard ?We Want Ziggler!? that whole match,? Zack Ryder said. ?They got him.?

The roof nearly blew off the IZOD Center when The Showoff stalked to the ring purposefully and shoved his Money in the Bank briefcase into referee Scott Armstrong?s chest, signaling that he was taking his opportunity at Del Rio?s World Heavyweight Championship. When Armstrong?s arm hit the mat for the third time and the bell rang, proclaiming Ziggler the new World Heavyweight Champion, the roar was deafening. It was a true star-making moment for WWE?s newest champion.

Obama budget makes cybersecurity a growing U.S. priority

By Andy Sullivan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama proposed on Wednesday increased spending to protect U.S. computer networks from Internet-based attacks in a sign that the government aims to put more resources into the emerging global cyber arms race.

Obama's budget proposal for the 2014 fiscal year, which begins October 1, calls for more military "hackers" to head off escalating cyber threats from China, Iran, Russia and other countries. It would also bolster defenses for government and private-sector computer networks.

Intelligence officials said last month that cyber attacks and espionage have supplanted terrorism as the top security threat facing the United States, and military officials sounded the alarm as well.

"Lock your doors," Air Force General Robert Kelher told space and cyber industry executives at a conference in Colorado on Tuesday night. "Someone from halfway around the world is trying to get into your network looking to steal what you are developing."

The administration is making cybersecurity a priority at a time when it is cutting back or holding the line on spending across wide swaths of the government.

Obama's budget, released on Wednesday, proposes to boost Defense Department spending on cyber efforts to $4.7 billion, $800 million more than current levels, even as it plans to cut the Pentagon's overall spending by $3.9 billion.

The Pentagon said it plans to expand its Cyber Command, a team of military hackers conducting what it calls "reconnaissance, surveillance, development, maintenance and analysis." The Pentagon also said it would expand efforts to protect its own computer networks.

Under the budget proposal, the Department of Homeland Security would spend $44 million more on a government-wide information-sharing effort even as its overall budget would shrink by $615 million, or 1.5 percent. The department also would fund more cybersecurity research and help private businesses and local governments bolster their online defenses.

Much of the cybersecurity spending is contained in classified reaches of the government that do not make their budgets public, making quantifying the overall proposed increase sought by the president impossible.

"The budget includes increases and improvements to a full range of cyberspace activities," the Obama administration said about its classified activities.

PFT: Raiders have $45 million in dead money

gavel-strike-frames-250-gettyGetty Images

As thousands of Davids prepare to take on the sports world?s Goliath in the NFL concussion lawsuits, Goliath has a fairly large stone that he?s about to drop on all of them.

Lost in the sympathy and intrigue generated by 4,200 former pro football players suing the caretakers of the game they played is the fact that the NFL, as it usually does, has some strong legal arguments.? The first one makes its way to Judge Anita Brody?s court in Philadelphia on Tuesday, after the submission of extensive written materials by the lawyers.

The NFL?s threshold position comes from the labor deal.? The league believes that the various Collective Bargaining Agreements negotiated by the players and the league control the situation, and that any claims for failure to protect players from concussions or to disclose to them the risks of concussions should be pursued via the dispute-resolution system created by the CBAs.

?Although the CBAs have changed over time pursuant to the collective bargaining process, every CBA expressly addresses player health and safety and provides grievance procedures for the resolution of disputes,? the league explained in a submission to the court, via the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The former players obviously disagree, but it?s common in situations like this for the employer to argue aggressively and loudly that workers who have banded together to form a union must rely on the less formal system of dispensing justice that the labor agreement creates.? The workers don?t prefer that approach because it removes from the process a jury of lay persons who could be inclined to decide the case based on dynamics other than the law and the facts.

A jury is far more likely to feel sorry for the former players than an arbitrator would.? Likewise, a jury would be much more inclined to resolve doubt in favor of the players, given the perception that the league has more than enough money to pay a verdict.? Throw in the idea that the men who made the game what is it today earned peanuts in comparison to the amounts paid to today?s players and coaches and executives and owners, and it becomes very easy for a jury to sidestep a morass of conflicting scientific contentions and legal arguments and decide to redistribute the wealth based on a visceral notion of fairness.

That?s why the NFL is fighting so hard to push the case from a court of law to arbitration.? And that?s why this initial skirmish in the concussion litigation will have a dramatic impact on the ultimate outcome of the case.

(AP) ? The leaders of Serbia and Kosovo negotiated Tuesday on one of the most difficult issues dividing them, as Serbia strains to meet conditions for eventual membership in the European Union.

Talks between the prime ministers of the two countries have reached a "decisive stage" as the two focus on the thorny issue of the status of Serb-dominated northern Kosovo, an EU official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss closed-door talks.

The talks ? the eighth face-to-face session between Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic and Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci ? are being held under the mediation of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.

"Today is a historical day," said Thaci as he entered Ashton's office building Tuesday morning to begin the talks. "It is a decisive moment for Kosovo and for the region."

In early afternoon, a spokeswoman for Ashton said that bilateral talks between Ashton and each of the two prime ministers had concluded and the three were now meeting together.

In a statement Monday, Ashton acknowledged the difficulty of the task.

"I believe an agreement is within reach ? though it will not be easy," she said.

Any agreement would be a landmark for the region, and a major step toward peace in the Balkans, which were riven in the 1990s by bloody wars associated with the breakup of Yugoslavia.

Kosovo, a former Serbian province, declared independence in 2008. While many countries have recognized it as an independent country, Serbia has not.

The ethnic Serbs living in northern Kosovo ? up to 50,000 people in and around the divided city of Mitrovica ? have rejected the authority of the government in Pristina, the Kosovo capital. They have created so-called parallel institutions, including hospitals and schools, all financed and supported from the Serbian capital, Belgrade.

However, in order for Serbia to join the EU ? something it dearly wants to do ? it must normalize relations with Kosovo. That includes not only resolving such ordinary issues as trade and border control, but also resolving the status of northern Kosovo ? and whether it falls under the authority of the government in Pristina.

Details of any possible deal remain murky, and its implementation would have many question marks, said Agron Bajrami, editor in chief of the largest Kosovo daily, Koha Ditore.

"Everybody is waiting to see what will it look like, but the greatest fear, the greatest risk, is that even if there is a deal we don't know how this deal will be implemented," Bajrami said. "There might be complications, especially in the north where the deal will have to address several very difficult issues ? security, political and social, as well."

Serbs in Kosovo's north say that any agreement that separates them from Serbia would not be acceptable.

"No way will we go with the Pristina authorities," said Tomislav Kostic, a resident of Mitrovica. "Only with the state of Serbia and that's it."

In the southern part of Mitrovica, ethnic Albanian Adem Mripa said the territory was part of Kosovo. He demanded reciprocity for the Albanian minority in Serbia's south.

"If they want autonomy here they should give it to Albanians in the south, to the Hungarian and Bosnian (minorities), Mripa said. "I am for talks, but talks that are forward-looking and visionary and peaceful."

A spokesman for the Kosovo government said the negotiations in Brussels could run on into Wednesday.

In a sign of the underlying tensions, Kosovo police said unknown assailants threw a fire bomb into the offices of moderate Serb leader Oliver Ivanovic in the Serb-run part of the country. No one was in the office when the attack was launched, minutes before midnight Monday. Ivanovic backs Serbia's claim over Kosovo, but many radical Serbs think that he might work with the ethnic Albanian authorities in Pristina.

Human remains possibly found in new 9/11 debris

NEW YORK (AP) ? Jim Riches pulled his son's mangled body out of the rubble at the World Trade Center, but the phone calls still filtered in years afterward. The city kept finding more pieces of his son.

"They'll call you and they'll tell you, 'We found a shin bone,'" Riches said. "Or: 'We found an arm bone.' We held them all together and then we put them in the cemetery."

Those are the phone calls both dreaded and hoped for among the families of Sept. 11 victims. And as investigators began sifting through newly uncovered debris from the World Trade Center this week for the first time in three years, those anxieties were renewed more than a decade after the attacks.

But there was also hope that more victims might yet be identified after tens of millions have been spent on the painstaking identification process. Two potential human remains were recovered on Monday, according to the medical examiner.

"We would like to see the other 40 percent of the families who have never recovered anything to at least someday have a piece of their loved one," Riches said. "That they can go to a cemetery and pray."

About 60 truckloads of debris that could contain tiny fragments of bone or tissue were unearthed by construction crews that have been working on the new World Trade Center in recent years. That material is now being transported to a park built on top of the former Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island, where investigators will attempt to find any possible remains during the next 10 weeks, the city said. That's the material the two potential human remains were found in.

The city's last sifting effort ended in 2010. This time, crews were able to dig up parts of the trade center site that were previously inaccessible to workers, the city said.

Some 2,750 people died at the World Trade Center in the 2001 terrorist attacks, but only 1,634 people have been identified.

"We have been monitoring the World Trade Center site over time and monitoring the construction," said Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office. "And if they see any material that could possibly contain human remains, we collect that material."

About 9,000 human remains recovered from the ruins of the World Trade Center remain unidentified because they are too degraded to match victims by DNA identification. The remains are stored at an undisclosed location monitored by the medical examiner's office and will eventually be transferred to a subterranean chamber at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

Some victims' families expressed impatience that the city has only just uncovered more debris.

"Quite frankly, they should've excavated this and searched it 12 years ago," said Diane Horning, whose son, Matthew, died in the attacks. "Instead, they built service roads and construction roads and were more worried about the building and the tourism than they were about the human remains."

The city's efforts to identify Sept. 11 victims have long been fraught with controversy.

In April 2005, the city's chief medical examiner, Charles Hirsch, told families his office would be suspending identification efforts because it had exhausted the limits of DNA technology.

But just a year later, the discovery of human remains on a bank tower roof and then in a manhole near ground zero outraged families who said the search for their loved ones had been rushed initially. The findings prompted a renewed search that cost the city tens of millions of dollars and uncovered 1,500 pieces of remains.

Meanwhile, some victims' relatives sued the city over its decision to move 1.6 million tons of materials from the trade center site to the Fresh Kills landfill, saying the material might contain victims' ashes and should have been given a proper burial.

The lawsuit was dismissed, and unsuccessfully appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

As it embarks on combing through debris yet again, the medical examiner's office says it will keep monitoring the site as long as new areas are being dug or exposed.

Charles G. Wolf was pleased to hear about the renewed search, though he believes that his wife, Katherine, was vaporized during the attack. Investigators have never found her remains.

Years ago, it bothered him that he had no grave to visit. Wolf said the opening of the Sept. 11 memorial has filled a hole in his heart, but he'll never have closure.

"You heal. You carry on," he said. "It's not closure."
