Top 10 Female Artists Who Were Institutionalized

In a society dominated by men, it took a long time before women could be heard or even seen. And it is neither a secret nor a surprise to say that many women?s voices remained closely guarded inside the walls of psychiatric hospitals. Few women that were institutionalized had a powerful enough voice or talent that enabled their works to resonate outside of those walls. The few that did are still echoing in society today.

Emma Santos might be the least popular on this list but I think her voice and her writing are so powerful that she deserves to be here. In the 1970s, she was frequently passing in and out of psychiatric hospitals. Her doctor, Roger Gentis, asked her to write about her life, which she did. One book after the other (she published 8 books) document her experience inside the walls of the asylum ? walls which never ceased to haunt her.

Valerie Valere

1961-1982

Valerie Valere was hospitalized in an asylum at 13 years of age for anorexia. Her treatment lasted a few months, which was long enough to traumatize her deeply. A few years after she left the hospital, she wrote a biography about her experiences (Le Pavillon des infants fous). Writing about her traumatic and involuntary imprisonment allowed her to finally talk about things she had locked away; she was one of the lucky ones who had a chance to be heard for the first time. When her book was published she became very popular in France (she is still quite popular today). For the first time, someone was listening to her voice. She published a few other books before dying at the age of 21. The causes of her death is still unknown today (though there are rumors of medication overdose).

Janet Frame is a New Zealand writer. Her childhood was marred by the drowning of her two sisters. In 1945, at the end of her teens, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and interned in an asylum. Inside its walls, she received hundred of electroshocks. It is also during this period that she started writing. This writing saved her from a lobotomy because she received a literature price just prior to the surgery. In 1961, her novel about her experiences in the asylum, ?Faces in the Water,? was published ? making her very popular. She continued to write all her life. She died in 2004 of leukemia. She is one of New Zealand?s most prized writers and there is even a movie about her ?An Angel at my Table? by much lauded director Jane Campion.

Mary Barnes was a British painter who was diagnosed with schizophrenia. She voluntary admitted herself to Kinsley Hall in London, which was an experimental and anti-psychiatry community created by Ronal Laing. The object of this community was to cure patients without the use of psychiatry. She eventually recovered completely from her schizophrenia and became a successful painter. She became popular after the publication of her book about her experiences in Kinsley Hall that was written in collaboration with her psychiatrist at that time, Joseph Berke.

Unica Zurn was a German writer. She came from a rich family but was emotionally very unstable. She met the artist Hans Bellmer and he introduced her to the surrealist artistic movement that was popular at the time. She created anagrams and drawings and she was talented enough to be published in Berlin?s gallery, Springer. A few years later, she met Henri Michaux, the surrealist writer, and her new friendship with him had a profound effect on her emotional well-being. She wrote ?Der Mann I?m Jasmin,? a beautiful, poetic and profound book about the man that she loved. Soon after, she would be hospitalized in a psychiatric clinic because of depression and psychosis. She tried to kill herself. It was to be the first of multiple stays in psychiatric clinic ? in Berlin and France. She killed herself in 1970.

Camille Claudel

1864-1943

Camille Claudel was a French sculptor. She is known for her tumultuous relationship with Auguste Rodin. At first, he was her teacher, but quickly, as he became aware of her talent, he began to consult her for every piece of art he was making. They started to create sculptures together but Anguste Rodin got all the media attention and Camille Claudel was still seen only as his student. Eventually, she took off on her own but didn?t get the recognition she deserved. In 1913, she was interned in a psychiatric hospital in France and stayed there for the rest of her life. She was miserable there and stopped sculpting ? receiving only a few visit from her brother (the other members of her family just ignored her). In 1943, she died of malnutrition, alone and depressed in the hospital.

Aloize Corbaz

1888-1964

Aloize was a Swiss artist. She was hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital during the first World War for schizophrenia. It was only after 1920 that she started drawing and painting. When Jean Dubuffet, the theorist that created the concept of Art Brut, included her work in his collection, she became a major representative of the movement.

Zelda Fitzgerald

1900-1948

Zelda Fitzgerald was married to the famous writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald in 1920. They were both regular members of the most prestigious literary clubs in the USA and in Europe. Their glamorous life where champagne was easily accessible had a perverse effect on the couple: Scott slowly became a paralyzed alcoholic and Zelda?s emotional instability led her to multiple psychiatric hospitalizations. In 1930, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia. In 1932, in Towson psychiatric clinic, she wrote ?Save Me the Waltz,? an autobiographic novel about her life with her husband. In 1948 she died in a huge fire in the psychiatric hospital where she was staying (Highland Mental Hospital).

Suzanna Kaysen wrote ?Girl, Interrupted? in 1993. It is a memoir of her hospitalization in MacLean Psychiatric Hospital in 1967. She stayed there for eighteen months for depression and borderline personality. In 1999, James Mangold created a cinematic adaptation of her book in which she is portrayed by Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie interprets brilliantly another patient.

Sylvia Plath was a writer and American poet who was married to the poet laureate Ted Hughes. Soon, her talent as a writer was uncovered. She published her first poem at the age of eight years-old and she never stopped publishing. In her life, she published a dozen books (all but one were poetry); her only novel was The Bell Jar (1963). Her life was a dark and heavy struggle against her bipolar disorder that she lost when she killed herself in 1963 at the age of 30. In the clip above Plath reads her own incredible poem ?Daddy.?

Cantor Gaming Exec Arrested In Pinnacle ... - Online Gambling News

Rumors swirled Wednesday morning that US law enforcement agents were preparing to pounce on a major sportsbetting business with operations both inside and outside the United States, and online sportsbetting fixture Pinnacle Sports? name was bandied about as a likely target. Later in the day, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Mike Colbert, Cantor Gaming?s sportsbook director and manager of the M Resort race and sportsbook had been arrested in Las Vegas on a warrant filed by the District Attorney?s office in Queens County, New York. Colbert is facing eight charges of conspiracy, money laundering and enterprise corruption.

Seven other related arrests were made in Las Vegas on Wednesday. [UPDATE: The Associated Press reports their identities as Joseph Paulk, Jerald Branca, Steven Diano, Brant England, Kelly Barsell, Ian Mandell and Paul Sexton.] The LVR-J?s sources claimed agents reportedly operating within the US on behalf of Pinnacle were also arrested, which Nevada Gaming Control Board enforcement chief Jerry Markling told the AP had occurred in California and New York. The New York DA?s office is expected to reveal more regarding the arrests on Thursday morning. Pinnacle Sports abruptly withdrew its services from the US market shortly before the Patriots-Giants Super Bowl in 2007, but Wednesday?s arrests suggest the firm had maintained some kind of credit-betting activity within the States. In highly ironic timing, Las Vegas-based brick-and-mortar casino outfit Pinnacle Entertainment chose today to release its Q3 earnings report. D?oh?

Adding an extra dose of irony, Colbert was interviewed by SportingNews.com just last week regarding New Jersey?s chances in its legal fight with the major sports leagues over the state?s sports betting plans. Regarding the leagues? claim that sports betting damages the integrity of their games, Colbert called it ?a complete fa?ade ? If you?re in the business and know what?s going on, you know that if there is ever anything close to something shady that we will be the ones that are able to point it out.? Colbert?s assertion that Cantor Gaming ?will explore any and all opportunities in the race and sports business? will likely cause massive eye-rolling down at Cantor HQ. For the record, there is no indication that Cantor Gaming is in any way connected with Colbert?s arrest.

[UPDATE: The M Resort is owned by Penn National Gaming. Last week, former thoroughbred owner Michael Gill lost a lawsuit against the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission regarding Gill?s ejection from Penn National racetrack in January 2010. On Oct. 17, the Paulick Report claimed Gill ?predicted a slew of federal indictments will prove that he was railroaded by Penn National ?insiders? who were engaging in offshore betting and other illegal activities.? The Paulick Report article goes on to state that ?an FBI investigation of jockeys, jockey agents, trainers, racetrack and Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission employees will lead to as many as 42 federal indictments. The indictments, Gill said, will involve manipulation of races, offshore gambling, collusion between trainers and test barn personnel, and embezzlement.? Gill is quoted as saying that after these indictments drop, ?then we?ll see if people will believe what I was saying at the time about all of the corruption at Penn National.?]

It might not be related, but around the same time Colbert was arrested, Baltimore County Police conducted raids on 10 internet caf?/sweepstakes businesses. While these raids might not appear to have any connection to Pinnacle or even to sports betting, the local police issued a statement that revealed it had conducted the raids in conjunction with the US Attorney?s office (which was responsible for the Blue Monday sportsbook indictments) and two federal agencies ? Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security ? after what the police referred to as a year-long investigation. Traditionally, these types of internet caf? busts don?t require more than the involvement of the local Barney Fife, so while it?s unlikely, there could be more to this than meets the eye. No arrests were made during the raids, but police are examining the evidence seized.

Amazon reports first quarterly net loss in years

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc reported its first quarterly net loss in more than five years on Thursday as the world's largest Internet retailer spent heavily and suffered from an economic slowdown in Europe.

Amazon shares slipped slightly to $220.75 in after-hours trading after the results.

The company said its third-quarter net loss was $274 million, or 60 cents a share, versus net income of $63 million, or 14 cents a share, in the third quarter of 2011. Part of the loss related to an impairment charge from Amazon's investment in daily deal company LivingSocial.

Third-quarter revenue was $13.81 billion, up 27 percent from a year earlier, Amazon also said.

Amazon was expected to lose 8 cents a share in the third quarter on revenue of $13.9 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The last time Amazon reported a quarterly net loss was in the third quarter of 2003, according to Thomson Reuters data.

For the crucial fourth-quarter holiday shopping period, Amazon forecast revenue that missed analysts' expectations. The company also gave a wide forecast for operating income in the period - and the mid-point of the range was lower than some analysts' estimates.

"There's increased competition from mass merchants and big box retailers embedded in that guidance," said RJ Hottovy, an equity analyst at Morningstar. "There's a lot of competition this holiday, and it's not clear how this will play out, even for smart operators like Amazon."

Amazon is facing more competition this holiday season from big retailers such as Target Corp and Best Buy Co Inc, which are planning to match some of the company's prices online.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world's largest retailer, is also testing same-day delivery in some cities this holiday, while Target is selling more exclusive products that cannot be bought at lower prices online.

Amazon is also spending heavily on new distribution warehouses and technology to support its cloud-computing businesses, Amazon Web Services. It is also investing hundreds of millions of dollars a year on digital content to sell through its Kindle tablets and e-readers.

Amazon Chief Financial Officer Tom Szkutak said the company will continue investing heavily in technology, infrastructure and digital content.

The company spent $1.51 billion on shipping and warehouses in the third quarter, up from $1.12 billion a year earlier. Technology and content spending reached $1.19 billion, up from $769 million in the same period last year.

The Kindle gadgets are being sold at cost, pressuring earnings in the short term. Amazon hopes to make money when customers use them to buy more physical and digital products from the company.

Amazon launched new Kindle Fire tablets in September and CFO Szkutak said demand has been "fantastic."

Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said in a statement that the new $199 Kindle Fire HD, the new Kindle Paperwhite e-reader and the entry-level $69 Kindle e-reader are the top three best-selling products on Amazon, based on unit sales.

Szkutak said Kindle Fire tablet users are purchasing a lot more digital content through the devices, as well as watching free video content.

The introduction of new tablets and e-readers should be good for digital content sales going forward, he added.

Europe's sovereign debt crisis and recession is reducing consumer demand, sparking concern that even fast-growing Internet companies may be affected.

EBay Chief Financial Officer Bob Swan said last week that the company expected an "OK" holiday season, partly because of macro pressure in Europe.

Amazon said on Thursday that revenue from North America was $7.88 billion, up 33 percent from a year earlier. International sales, including Europe, totaled $5.92 billion, up 20 percent from the same period in 2011.

Wall Street lower, Caterpillar latest to miss on revenues

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks were modestly lower on Monday as investors fretted about the impact of slower global growth on corporate revenues, offsetting earnings that beat expectations.

Caterpillar's shares seesawed after the heavy equipment maker became the latest to exceed expectations on the bottom line but fall short of revenue forecasts. The stock fell early, turned around to rally, and then again gave up those gains and was most recently flat at $83.86 a share.

The market is caught in a push-pull between earnings that are beating lowered expectations while revenues come in weak, said Brian Gendreau, market strategist with Cetera Financial Group in Gainesville, Florida.

"I think the market is focusing on that, they're looking for the top line rather than the bottom line," said Gendreau.

Of the 123 S&P 500 companies that have reported results, 60.2 percent have topped analysts' expectations for earnings, but 61 percent have missed on revenue forecasts, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Earnings are expected to fall 2.4 percent in the third quarter from a year ago.

Caterpillar Inc, the world's largest maker of tractors and excavators, slashed its 2012 forecast for the second time this year, warning the global economy was slowing faster than it had expected.

"Caterpillar is a cyclical stock, and there's always a battle between a slowdown in the economy and growth expectations. The stock is extremely volatile during periods when the economic outlook is uncertain," said Shawn Hackett, president at Hackett Financial Advisors in Boynton Beach, Florida.

The S&P appeared once again to be testing the 50-day moving average around 1,434, which has proven to be a strong support level. A convincing break below could signal further declines.

Mining company Freeport-McMoRan lost 2.2 percent to $40.28 after it said third-quarter profit fell sharply, missing Wall Street estimates, due to a big drop in gold production in Indonesia.

LONDON (AP) -A football hooligan has been jailed for 16 weeks for attacking former England goalkeeper Chris Kirkland during a pitch invasion in a second-tier League Championship match.

Aaron Cawley, a 21-year-old from Cheltenham, pleaded guilty to charges of assault and entering the field of play when he appeared Monday at Sheffield Magistrates' Court.

Kirkland needed medical treatment after being shoved in the face and to the ground amid violent scenes during his Sheffield Wednesday side's match against Leeds at Hillsborough, which was broadcast live on British television on Friday

Anxious Turks suspect US plot is behind Syria's implosion

In an empty coffee house in Antakya, local tradesman Ahmet Sari's face crumples in anger as he speaks about Syria.

?What's happening in Syria is all part of America's great project to reshape the borders of the Middle East. America and its allies don't care about bringing democracy to the Syrian people. Nineteen months into Syria's conflict, resentment of Ankara and anti-US sentiment simmer in Antakya, which lies just over the border with Syria. The province is grappling with an ailing trade and tourism sector and an influx of refugees and rebel fighters. Locals blame the Turkish government for dragging them into the conflict by backing the Syrian opposition and aligning Turkey with the opposition's Western allies.

The current administration's "zero problems with neighbors" foreign policy, which stood strong for several years, now rings hollow as Turkey's diplomatic ties with Syria and its ally Iran sour due to Ankara's support for the rebels. And many say that all of these problems can be traced back to the US, who they are convinced got involved with, and perhaps even fomented, the Syrian unrest to loosen up regional powers' grip on oil, enlisting Turkey as a pawn in the process. It had little to do with support for democracy, they believe.

STIRRING UP THE 'BEEHIVE'

The beliefs stem in part from a bold Bush administration political proposal that has faded into obscurity in the West, but remains lodged in the minds of many here. Known as the Greater Middle East Initiative, it was formally introduced by then-US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in 2006 at a conference in Tel Aviv. Her references to "the birth pangs of a New Middle East" and the unveiling there of a new map of the region featuring a "Free Kurdistan" are still remembered with resentment.

Even with a new administration in the White House that has sought to distance itself from the previous administration's Middle East policies, many in the region are suspicious of US motives and don't believe that the various uprisings began as indigenous, people-driven movements, independent of any US involvement.

Refik Eryilmaz, a Turkish parliamentarian from Antakya with the opposition Republican People's Party, says that Western superpowers are trying to incite a sectarian conflict between Sunnis and Shiites so that countries in the region fragment along ethno-religious lines, becoming weaker in the process.

Syria is predominantly Sunni, but President Bashar al-Assad is an Alawite, a Shiite offshoot, as is most of his government.

"The access to oil will be made easier when people in these regions are divided and fighting amongst themselves. Both the US and Israel want to weaken Iran and strengthen their own position in the Middle East. But to do this, first they must weaken Syria and replace the current government with someone who supports them instead of Iran," says Mr. Eryilmaz.

This suspicion ? that outside intervention is stirring up sectarian strife in Syria ? is a view shared by many in Antakya, Turkey's most ethno-religiously diverse province.

Although Nihat Yenmis, president of the Alevi Cultural Foundation (AKAD) in Iskenderun, is convinced that sectarian violence will not seep into Turkey, he laments the plight of Syrian civilians, caught up in the cross-fire of a conflict that he interprets as planned and stoked by outside intervention.

?All ethno-religious groups have lived side by side in this region for centuries. But if someone hits a beehive from the outside, they will destroy the peace within the hive. All the bees inside the hive will fight with one another. That's exactly what the US is doing in the Middle East,? says Mr. Yenmis.

Gilbert Achcar, a professor of international relations at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, says that the Greater Middle East Initiative has long since been abandoned, and all that remains is the deep skepticism of US motives that it spurred. Those in the Middle East tend to attribute more power to the US than it actually has, he says.

?The US is overwhelmed by the situation in the Middle East and is not in control, let alone plotting something. The GMEI never took root. It just provided a grand name that fueled people's imaginations, and conspiracy theories were invented," he says.

A PENCHANT FOR CONSPIRACIES

The region's penchant for Western conspiracy theories is long-standing, beginning with the then-secret 1916 Sykes-Picot Agreement that divided up the region between the British and the French, Mr. Achcar says.

That history influenced the perception of the Bush administration's Greater Middle East Partnership Initiative, later renamed the New Middle East Project, that was drawn up in 2004 in response to potential "threats of terrorism" in the wake of 9/11. The mission was to bolster democracy and socio-economic development in the Middle East and North Africa and build a bulwark against the expansion of radical terrorist groups, such as Al Qaeda.

But the initiative stalled in the face of heightened anti-American sentiment in the wake of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. Prominent Arab figures were quick to criticize it as another US attempt to "reform" a region it did not fully understand. In an article published in pan-Arab newspaper Al-Hayat in 2004, the chief editor of the Arab Human Development Report, Nader Fergany, criticized the "arrogant" worldview of the the Bush administration which "causes it to behave as if it can decide the fate of states and peoples.?

Tasked with alleviating Arab mistrust, the US selected Turkey as a key bridge between the US and the Middle East. The ruling Justice and Development Party's promotion of "conservative democracy" appealed to the West because of its reformist stance, and to Islamic countries in the Middle East due to its emphasis on a traditional Muslim identity.

But today, Turkey's role as a bridge between the West and the Arab world on the Syrian conflict has again raised suspicions. Its alliances with the US and autocratic countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar, who have also come out as strong backers of the Syrian opposition, have provoked accusations that Turkey is more intent on weakening secular Syria and reinstating a Sunni government than in democracy.

While Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed last year on a live broadcast that the US initiative never took root, some in the Middle East still refer back to Mr. Erdogan's older statements of being GMEI's co-chairman, and remain convinced that a US-inspired scheme ? with Turkey taking the lead ? is underway.

?Perhaps the US is doing what's right for its own country and implementing a foreign policy that will protect its dominance in the world, but we have to inquisition the countries that are acting as a US pawn. Many people in Turkey think that Turkey is merely serving US interests in the region to its own detriment,? says Eryilmaz.

Back in Antakya's coffee house, with no end in sight to the Syrian conflict, local trader Ahmet Sari shows how deeply this sentiment reaches.

?So many people have died unnecessarily in Syria ? children are dying," he says, wearily. "We just want this war to stop and for there to be peace. We don't hate the American people. We just want the US administration to stop trying to spread its expansionist policies.?

SALINAS, Calif. (AP) ? A moderate earthquake and minor aftershocks jolted the central California coast over the weekend but didn't cause any damage, authorities said.

Nearly 6,700 people reported feeling the magnitude 5.3-quake when it struck late Saturday outside of King City, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its website.

USGS geophysicist Don Blakeman said the temblor struck in a "seismically active area" near the San Andreas Fault, about 90 miles southeast of San Jose. It was followed by at least four aftershocks that were greater than magnitude 2.5.

The area where the quake hit is a mostly rural area of rolling hills with large farms and ranches.

A magnitude 5-quake is capable of causing damage ? most often knocking things off shelves and making moderate cracks in walls and foundations, the USGS said. The sheriff departments for Monterey and nearby San Luis Obispo counties said they received calls about the earthquake but no reports of damage.

Far to the north, a minor earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.5 rattled an area 15 miles east of Eureka, USGS said. Eureka police said no damage or injuries were reported.

The quake near Eureka was not related to the ones near King City, Blakeman said.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House says it is prepared to talk one-on-one with Iran to find a diplomatic settlement to the impasse over Tehran's reported pursuit of nuclear weapons, but there's no agreement now to meet.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said Saturday that President Barack Obama has made clear that he will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and will do whatever's necessary to prevent that from happening. Vietor said Iran must come in line with its obligations, or else faced increased pressure.

"The onus is on the Iranians to do so, otherwise they will continue to face crippling sanctions and increased pressure," Vietor's statement said.

Iran has been a recurring issue in the presidential election. The New York Times reported Saturday that the U.S. and Iran have agreed in principle for the first time to negotiations. The paper said Iran has insisted the talks wait until after the Nov. 6 election.

Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will meet Monday night in a debate focusing on foreign policy and Iran's nuclear ambitions will likely be a topic. Obama has said he'll prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He hopes sanctions alongside negotiations can get Iran to halt uranium enrichment. But the strategy hasn't worked yet. Obama holds out the threat of military action as a last resort. Romney has accused Obama of being weak on Iran and says the U.S. needs to present a greater military threat.

Despite unprecedented global penalties, Iran's nuclear program is advancing. Western nations fear the Islamic republic is determined to develop nuclear weapons and fundamentally reshape the balance of power in the Middle East. That would pose a grave threat to Israel. Iran says its program is for peaceful energy and research purposes.

With the Iraq war over and Afghanistan winding down, worries about the possibility of a new U.S. military conflict focus on Iran.

Iran's suspect nuclear program has topped the international agenda and pressures on Tehran are mounting.

Israel has threatened to strike Iran's nuclear facilities if Tehran doesn't stop uranium enrichment a process that can be a pathway to nuclear arms. Israel could decide to strike Iran's nuclear sites on its own, and Israeli leaders say time to act is running out.
